Imagineer a web site

All I really need to know about library web site design I learned from John Hench, Disney Imagineer (All quotes from Designing Disney: Imagineering and the Art of the Show by John Hench with Peggy Van Pelt--the fourth book I've read in 2005):

  • Treat visitors as desired guests. "Liking the guests is key to everything we do." p. 20

  • Make sure everything on the site is easily recognized for what it is. "Identity facilitates decision making." p. 37

  • Design beckoning links for the most important aspects of the site. "Walt observed that people move toward things that are inviting." p. 50

  • Draw thumbnails of the steps the visitor will take in the site. "Storyboards enable us to design sequences of experiences that take guests to peak moments." p. 67

  • Create a character to host the site. "Mickey and Minnie are the host and hostess of the Magic Kingdom in every park; when they welcome guests there, they are welcoming them into their own home." p. 95

Okay, that last one probably is too silly. But it might work on a college campus with a great mascot. Or maybe you could get Nettie Day.     #
