State of emergency

I live in an area that has been officially declared to be in a state of emergency. Which makes me an extremely lucky person since the storms and power outages have effected me in only minor ways: a few hours without power, an extended commute to work due to inoperable traffic signals, and little adventures to find the grocery stores and other services that are open. One of my co-workers is having a much worse time: a tree fell on both of their cars and the power is still out at her house.

Our storm on Wednesday night made national news since we had hundreds of thousands of people without power on Thursday, the hottest day of the year. I suspect it hasn't been reported as widely that just as the electric company was starting to get large numbers of people back on, we were hit by another storm yesterday. The highest number of total customer outages that I heard this week was last night: 570,000 in the bi-state region. Fortunately, the weather has improved--twenty degrees cooler and pleasantly low humidity.

When we got chased home from Florida by Hurricane Charley a couple of years ago, we were awed by the many convoys of electric trucks headed toward the disaster area. I was listening to the Home Improvement Show on KMOX a little bit ago while running errands when someone called in to say he was seeing convoys like that headed to St. Louis.     #
