Wanderings of a Librarian

Librarian Talk Radio

The first episode of Greg Schwartz' brain child, Uncontrolled Vocabulary, an internet streaming audio show for libary discussion, was last night. You'll hear me once or twice. A call-in show is not my best forum for expression (you're reading my best forum for expression), but that's okay. Sometimes, life really is just about showing up and being part of things. I had a great time hanging out with other librarians and I'm looking forward to doing it again next week -- same time (Thursday at 10PM EDT, 9PMCDT), same place.

You don't have to call in to participate. You can simply listen. You can register and download the software so that you can also use the typed chat feature and see the list of participants. You can listen to the MP3 recording after the live event. All of that is explained on the Uncontrolled Vocabulary blog.     #

Joy, I had fun hanging out with you and the others as well. It's always hard when you can't see everyone to know when to chime in without overriding others.

I didn't have much experience to comment on some of those issues since I work at a college and public libraries have such different issues to deal with in many regards.

My first inclination is to make snarky comments, but to people who don't know me and my sense of humor I am afriad I will come off like an A-hole. Sometimes the "little devil" on the shoulder beats out the angel though. Was definitely fun. Nice to (sort of) meet you there. :-)

Joy, thanks for bring Uncontrolled Vocabulary to my attention. I enjoyed being able to participate by listening and chatting (a little). Also, I like how we can suggest topics for the show by tagging items with "unvocab" in del.icio.us.

I wonder how well this kind of software app might lend itself to events such as the BIGWIG showcase in the future??

Joy, I was so very glad that you were there. I fully agree that it won't be everyone's best format for expression and, quite frankly, there'll be a limit to how many voices a single conversation can sustain. If the live participation grows significantly, it'll introduce some management challenges for me. But that's a good problem to have, right?

Yes, I'd definitely say that's a good problem to have. As you no doubt heard, I love to blather. Next week I'll try to shut up a little more. (Besides, I think I've already told all my really good stories--oops!)
